For
many women who become infertile after cancer treatment
or premature menopause, the dream of having a child is
shattered. But new advances are offering hope.
According
to MSNBC.com, scientists have found a better way to freeze
human eggs. By increasing the concentration of sucrose
in the freezing solution, the scientists discovered they
could triple the survival rate of the eggs. The new process
reduces the chance that an ice crystal will rupture the
egg membrane. Before the new technique, egg survival
rate was between 35 and 60%. With the new technique,
the egg has an 80 to 83% chance. This new technology
will allow women to freeze their eggs before undergoing
cancer treatment or going through menopause, offering
hope that they may someday still have a child
